What this book is

A practical, tender manual for men who want their relationships to last.

If you have ever heard a friend say, “We had such a good relationship, and then she just upped and left” — you can be certain that’s only half the story. Something was wrong long before the leaving. It just wasn’t noticed in time.

This book is about noticing earlier. It’s about being awake to the woman you live with, the patterns you bring from your father’s house, and the small daily choices that quietly build — or quietly erode — a shared life.

The old scripts have worn thin. Men used to know what was expected of them, even when they couldn’t live up to it. Today, whose rules do you follow? Your parents’? Your mates’? The media’s? Your partner’s? Your own? This is a manual to help you find your way through.

Who it’s for

For the man who loves her — and wants to love her better.

The man at the threshold

In a new relationship and wanting to begin well. You sense the stakes are higher than the culture lets on, and you want a quiet word from someone who has been through it.

The man in the long middle

Years in, with children, mortgages and history. The romance has thinned and the small irritations have thickened. You want it back, and you suspect the work is yours to do first.

The man after a loss

A relationship has ended and you’re not sure how it slipped away. Before stepping into the next one, you want to understand what you couldn’t see the last time.

A taste of the book

Aural Sex — the art of listening.

Most men think they listen. Their partners would disagree. Listening, the way she means it, is not about waiting for your turn to fix the problem. It is a slower, more naked thing — the willingness to let her experience land inside you and change something there.

The chapter walks through the small habits that make a woman feel heard: the put-down phone, the unhurried question, the resistance to the urge to defend. None of it is difficult. All of it is unfamiliar.

The book closes with a Quick Quiz — twenty honest questions a man can sit with on his own, or, if he’s brave, over coffee with her.

“Practical advice written without new-age gloss or ego.”

A unique approach to the universal challenge men face: how to live happily with a woman. With astonishing insight, Gunther gives clear, down-to-earth, practical instructions on the fundamentals of a successful relationship.

Excellent, easy to read, useful and theoretically sound. I rarely read self-help books, but Gunther's is simply outstanding. Practical advice written without new-age gloss or ego — a real joy to read and learn from.

A note from Vinay

Why I wrote this.

It began with a conversation. A friend’s partner was telling me, carefully and clearly, the reasons she was about to leave him. I walked home unsettled. Another good man about to lose a fine woman because he had stopped listening years ago and never noticed.

I thought about my own marriages, my own mistakes, the cost of them. I woke the next morning with the book already there. I sat down and wrote for ten hours without stopping. The core of it arrived in a single day. The next five years were spent shaping it, testing it on readers, and learning, slowly, what to leave out.

My promise to readers is small and serious. If one man reads this book, applies one thing from it, and his relationship is better for it — then the years of writing were worth it.
